One of the major issues that figures prominently on many Americans’ choice on who to vote for in elections is taxes. GENERALLY speaking, the LEFT favor taxes to fund public programs and the RIGHT favor lowering taxes to give money back to the wage earner. The problem with voting LEFT is that people don’t really get to see what their money is being used for. For example, a single, independent tax payer with no children pays taxes to fund public schools, despite the fact that he has no children to send to these schools. Paradoxically, a married tax payer with dependents pays fewer taxes to fund these same public schools that he sends his kids to. However, the problem with voting RIGHT is that conservatives tend to drive America into recessions. So, while taxes will be lowered and the tax payer will see more of his earned money, the value of that money will suck. Right now, the US dollar is pretty worthless compared to the Euro (and on par with the Canadian dollar!).
I don’t really understand the concept of taxation. It’s generally said that, “The more you work, the more taxes you pay.” But, the concept of taxation seems to be more like the government saying, “The more money you make (gross income), the more money we’ll let you have (net income).” Furthermore, it seems to foster laziness. If we consider a lazy person who doesn’t have a job and has no motivation to work, the government will leave him alone. However, should he choose to try to get ahead in life, make something of himself, and get a job, then Uncle Sam will be knocking on his door every April 15.
So, be a bum if you don’t want the government on your back. God bless Amerikkka!

What I think is more true, concerning taxation making people want to be bums, is that as you make more and more money, taxation becomes more complicated. You could leave the average rates alone, and just make it so that higher brackets get a shorter and simpler form. TADA! Instant motivation without decreasing tax revenues!
More seriously, I think that the conservative idea is more sound in theory. It takes 8 government workers to do the work of 1 in the free-market, which should mean that every liberal idea is terrible. But it turns out that ALL OF THE MONEY IS WORTHLESS TO BEGIN WITH, so at least the liberals magicked it into services at all, instead of letting it sit in a bank and become more worthless.
I don't want you to get the wrong impression though. I'm no leftist. I'm going to live in a bunker with lots of guns and a pile of gold. They can tax my worthless paper crap all day, but if they touch my gold I'll shoot them.
(That's step 3. Step 1 is "get some guns and a bunker." Step 2 is "get some gold".)
The problem with the idea that poor people are getting a nice, free ride is that it's not a NICE ride. Getting taxed less because you're poor might be an incentive to stay poor, but it's often not a big enough incentive to override the desire to have a better life.
It makes sense to tax more the more you make, because a BIG reason you're making more is because of the system that opens up more opportunities for the wealthy. It's a simple system - taxes are just the way you pay for opportunity.
And as far as donating taxes to causes you might not have direct interests in - that also makes sense. There are some causes that some people might never donate to because they don't have a directly-vested interest in it, but everyone benefits indirectly from the improved well-being of their surroundings. Government is there to prod people into doing the right things that they might not do otherwise, for your own selfish reasons (and let's face it - all humans are selfish).
@poosywhistle - This post was sarcastic. I agree with everything you said 100%.
I haven't seen you around in a while. How are ya?
@manilajones - Yeah, I've just been lurking around - just been working on other stuff too much to post or comment.
