Apartment Foto Friday #24 / Winter Finale

Spring is just around the corner.  That means it's time for the biannual tradition of turning my books around.

During the fall and winter months the books are arranged with the gray pages facing outwards:

In spring and summer the books are arranged with the colorful bookcovers and spines facing out:

The blog will be taking a planned spring break beginning next week so this will be the last post of the winter.  This break could not have come at a better time.  Over the past couple of weeks there has been a noticeable decrease in the traffic on this site.  All things considered, there are ultimately two explanations for this.  The first explanation is that my skills as a writer has deteriorated rapidly to the point that I am no longer taken seriously.  I am no longer able to write content that is entertaining, nor can I convey thoughts that are relevant to the Xanga audience, American culture, or society in general.  This might be true, and those who are familiar with me would know that I would be the first to admit this.

However, one of the criticisms that I often receive is that I am too "self-deprecating" and that I'm too "hard on myself."  This might be true, too, but, beginning today, I'm going to listen to my critics and not put myself down.  The "old Shane" might have accepted the explanation that his writing sucks.  But not anymore!  My writing has not deteriorated at all.  So, why has my readership gone down?  This brings us to explanation number two...

My readers are a bunch of morons.  Yes, I'm talking about YOU.  I make no apologies because you buffoons don't get any of my musical references.  I don't feel bad because you idiots fail to see how every time I dissect pop culture I'm explaining some aspect of your miserable life.   I couldn't care less if you don't "get" creative writing that relates American sports to being alive.  Every entry that I post on this fucking blog is a stroke of creative genius that can't be appreciated in its own time.  I'm the greatest and everyone else sucks!  Do you think you can find something on Xanga that's better than this?  Unless it's kaleidescopeeyes88, I highly doubt it.  And don't refer me to the simpletons on the Top Blogs page.  I'd rather listen to the Blue Scholars.  Oh wait!  That probably went over your head, too.

Here's another picture to keep you entertained:

See you in the spring, fuckers.

Aw, I'm flattered by the shout out.  Though I confess I've been lacking inspiration lately and haven't been writing much of substance.  Which probably explains my decreased traffic as well.  Or maybe it's the economy.  I'm blaming everything on the economy.

I want a close-up of your books!  I like seeing what people read.  And I think books are the best decorative feature in any house.  I hope to one day have a living room with a wall of built-in shelves displaying my collection.

  • mini_mayfield

Why do you always care about traffic so much?

    You need a hobby. :P

I also like that floral arrangement. It's odd, yet pretty.

    Cum back sooooooooooon.

  • kaiori

    It's called "music snob".

The problem is that you have become such mainstream material on Xanga that all the self-declared subversives have rebelliously gone elsewhere. You're being snubbed by the Xanga snobs. Now the question is: where do they go?

Why do you turn your books around?

  • ManOfThe21st

    @Pandaluv11 - i don't know if they are indeed books -_-

  • manilajones

@kaiori - I don't think I'm a music snob.  I don't think any fan of Avril Lavigne would be classified as such.

  • espoir

Yes, why do you turn your books around?

  • manilajones
  • Pitohui

I think your readership has decreased because you're actually kinda lame.  I lurked for a bit, them subscribed.  Since then, I've noticed that you've said or done some pretty lame stuff.  You've probably been doing it all along, but I've seen enough to know it's not just a fluke.  Perhaps other people have realized that and stopped reading, even though your posts are amusing.

So really, I don't think you're too "hard on yourself" or "self-depreciating."  You seem to know full well how much you're worth.

"The first explanation is that my skills as a writer has deteriorated rapidly to the point that I am no longer taken seriously."

yes, manilla, you can haz a cheeseburger.

also, i'm gonna have to go with pitohui on this one. your narcissism competes only with that of michelle phan, though at least her posts are aesthetically pleasing and she makes no claims to be among the xanga-elite of writing, music, or social commentary for that matter. you're quite right when you say no fan of avril lavigne can call themself a music snob, and yet you so plainly label yourself as such when lamenting that no one gets your "references". no one gets your references because what you're referencing is shit. seriously. avril? maroon five? lily allen? what are you, a 16 year old girl?

while i am slightly amused by your anecdotal posts, don't flatter yourself manila. no one's going to miss you ALL that much.

    get over yourself.

  • manilajones

@xandra_k - What the hell?  You're in an awfully pissy mood.  This post was 90% sarcastic.  Other than this post, can you cite any other entries that hint at my "narcissism" or claim that I am among the "xanga-elite of writing?"  Yes, many people don't get my music references, as evident by the fact that you failed to recognize my reference to the Blue Scholars in this very entry.  I make references to Avril and Maroon 5 for morons like you.

I never said that anyone was going to miss me.  Thanks for being a faithful reader of my blog though.  I'm sorry I can't say that I've ever read your blog.  I have no idea who the hell you are, nor have I ever heard of you.

  • Shy___Away

@xandra_k - I found this line planted firmly in the body of his post: "I'm the greatest and everyone else sucks!"

Now tell me, if you've read anything by manilajones at all, would that lead to you the logical conclusion that he was being even remotely sincere when writing this?

Settle the fuck down, you cock jockey.

  • anonymous

Shane, do not stop the self-defacation.  I actually enjoy that.  And I believe you meant you "couldn't care less if you don't get creative writing...."   Most morons state the expression as "I could care less," which is really idiotic, because it amounts a worthless opinion.  On the other hand, if you couldn't care less, you feel so ambivalent about the situation because it is so beneath you.  That is something worth hearing.  And I couldn't care less about those who post comments, because they are all clearly idiots, except for Mini.  Too bad she's so young for old guys like us.

  • curtainsopen

@xandra_k - you're totally rude, and totally wrong.

  • kaiori

    @wherethefishlives - I'm with you!

If manilajones isn't careful he might just find himself with a fan club. He'll be so embarrassed he'll never post again!

  • ManOfThe21st

since we are in the mood to fight in this comment section:

@legend -  don't be calling people you don't know idiots, especially Shy, she's a smartie, and an exceptional writer, i am clearly not, but i can say stuff like,

fuck you legend! you will smith wannabe, or, you wannabe with will smith? ooOOHH

  • nora2186

The reason I stopped reading is because you remind me of Chuck Klosterman.  The problem is, you remind me of how good he is, and how you can't compare.  There are similarities that I see you are trying to incorporate in your writing.  Not that your writing isn't good; it's just not as good as his.

Klosterman definitely calls people idiots, just like you do at times, but somehow when Klosterman does it, it doesn't sound pretentious.  He can convey sarcasm and one can catch this without really knowing his previous writing.  He's good like that.
Enjoy your hiatus.  I hope you come back refreshed and with something that is truly your own, like that one entry I read a long time ago.
