    THE GREAT KATE DEBATE

A few days ago drphil7, myself, and a waitress named Melissa had a rather spirited discussion about Kate Beckinsale’s level of “hotness”.  I staunchly defended her as the most gorgeous woman in Hollywood, while drphil7 and the waitress vehemently accused her of being “average”.  While the 18-year-old waitress belittled Kate next to the likes of Jessica Alba and Angelina Jolie (and, in effect, cut her tip), drphil7 conceded that Kate was better looking than all of the girls on Sex and the City.  That’s hardly a consolation.

Clearly, this conversation left me somewhat unsatisfied.  drphil7 was obviously insane, and the waitress was obviously naïve.  So over the subsequent days I set out on another quest for the truth.  I asked people their perception of Kate Beckinsale, but I didn’t ask just anybody.  I sought out the intellectual geniuses who have their pulses set to America’s heartbeat:  coffee shop baristas.

Starbucks Coffee, Burbank CA:  The barista who took my order was a dopey looking young man who was most likely around 17-years-old.  After he took my order I asked him to name one person in Hollywood who he thought was prettier than KB.  He had no idea who KB was, so I explained to him that she was the actress in the Underworld movies.  His eyes lit up immediately upon hearing this, but then he admitted to liking Jessica Simpson more than “that vampire chick”.

The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, Burbank CA:  I approached the counter with confidence because the barista seemed mature and sophisticated, much like KB!  She was a tall woman in her late 20s, with long brown hair and a great smile.  She was mighty cheerful and quite pleasant.  After ordering my drink, I asked if she thought Jessica Alba was prettier than KB.  She was amused by the question and she actually seemed perplexed.  After much thought she admitted that Jessica was hot, but Kate was such a “sweetheart” in Serendipity.  In the end, she picked Kate.  Score!!

The Café at Barnes and Noble, Burbank CA:  This barista looked like Sheryl Crow on acid.  I caught her cleaning up the table next to where I was sitting.  We struck up a quick conversation about Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie (she was picking up a magazine with them on the cover) when I asked her who she would rather see on TV tonight: KB or Angelina Jolie.  She probably didn’t understand the question, but replied something like, “either way you can count me in”, and then she went on about her business. Word.

Meh, that’s par for the course, I suppose.
