    DEFINE SELF LOVE

I think it’s safe to say that everyone is on some sort of search to identify themselves. This is ingrained in our heads from the moment we’re born and labeled with a name. We all begin life as either a son or a daughter. Some of us become a brother or sister. We eventually become a friend. Some of us become Jewish, some of us become Muslim, some of us become agnostic, and some of us become Mel Gibson. School teaches us to define ourselves even more. We’re told to choose a career. We’re told to choose a lifestyle. We’re expected to become a partner, and we’re expected to become a parent.

Perhaps the constant bombardment of identifying contexts has made us numb to the concept of identity altogether. I can’t help but notice that people take their identity for granted, and people don’t consciously attempt to define who they are. Do we really know who we are when we are constantly defining ourselves within the contexts of our relationships? It’s easy to say that I’m a [marital status] [age]-year-old, [ethnicity] [gender] [occupation] who enjoys [hobbies]. But how does your identity relate to the Universe? And is there more to life than just existing? Life isn’t about mortgages, sex, and mutual funds. The goal of life is to define your existence.

And love is the realization that your existence can be validated. You can only truly love someone when you know who your real self is. And people who don’t know themselves will “fall in love” with anyone.
